About

About Your hosts

We’re local natives who spent 15 years living in Boston, Ireland, Pittsburgh, and New York City before making the move back home.

Nora is Director of Product for Foreign Affairs magazine by day and plays with local bands The Boom Chickens, Craobh Dugan O’Looney, and Fiddlebutter by night. In 2019, Nora founded The Garret’s artist residency program as a way to serve working, caregiving, and folk artists. Since 2020, that program has provided stipends and off-site studio space through a partnership with The Kirkland Art Center, a historic community art & music organization three doors down.

Mike has an MFA in Dramatic Writing from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, and manages to fit a day job in Instructional Design at Hamilton College around the edges of his freelance writing for children’s television and teaching comedy at UTCA.

As working artists with day jobs, our vision for the Garret on the Green has always been to provide a cozy, peaceful space that can serve weary urban travelers and rural adventurers alike. From artist residencies to artist retreats, weekend trips with friends, corporate travel, or a visit to Hamilton College, we want The Garret to help make your visit to Central New York comfortable, beautiful, and easy.

The Garret on the Green is located on the second floor of our home, a historic church built in 1821. The space has a separate entrance and its own freshly renovated kitchenette and master bathroom complete with giant soaking tub for unwinding at the end of your day. Check out our Amenities page for more information about the space.

If you’re a writer or artist, we recommend applying to our artist residency; a program designed for caregiving artists, artists with day jobs, and artists working in historically underfunded folk mediums like textile art, cartoons and animation, handcrafts, and traditional music and dance. You can also email us to inquire about our off-season discount retreats for artists & writers.
